The blaze, which destroyed one-third of an apartment building, was ruled arson on Monday.
Austin Fire Department spokesman David Ochoa said the blaze began when a neighbor called 911 to report that a fire was taking place in a residence in the 2500 block of West South Street.
He said a fire alarm was sounded at 1:20 a.m. and the fire spread to the apartment complex, where firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.
The apartment complex is at the corner of South and East Avenues.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Ochoas said investigators believe the fire started due to an electrical short.
Ocho ase said that it could be arson.
The Austin Fire Department did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press.
